Day One, Working for the Queen
It was a cool Wednesday evening up in northern England and in a detached house on Teesside, Ray and Dona were sat listening to Oscar Jamerson explain how he would like them to work for the government. Oscar through his investigations, had found Ray and Dona using a device, the Artifact, to jump together from one place to another, sometimes onto another continent.
Oscar had started his search when machinery in the government office he worked for, had flagged up unusual activity involving a strange object. He had started his search in northern England before moving on to an island just of the French coast. He had spent over a week on his investigations, following the Artifact and had eventually found it with Ray and Dona. He had then gone on to prove what they where doing with the Artifact and eventually had it confiscated in Portsmouth over a month ago.
Since then though, Oscar and the rest of the secret service, had been unable to make the Artifact work. So Oscar was here, to ask Ray and Dona to work the Artifact or show them how it worked, although Oscar doubted that they could do that. The way Oscar put it was, if they could make the Artifact work, then Ray and Dona would work with him as their supervisor, doing some rather small but important jobs for the government.
Ray had got his wits back by now and asked what sort of money would be involved in these small government jobs. Oscar laughed, amused by how quickly Ray had caught on to what he was saying and replied that they would not have to worry about money any more.
Ray and Dona had a quick private conversation and decided that working for the government with Oscar, would be far better than what they were doing at the moment, nothing. They also liked Oscar, he had been very good company in France.
Ray asked when they would be required to start and Oscar said, that tomorrow morning they could all set off for London, the quicker the better. Oscar now asked if they would like to go up to the village for a beer, to celebrate their new partnership and he was also staying there in the pub. Dona said that she would have to pack if they were going away tomorrow but Oscar said that it didn't matter, they could buy new stuff in London.
Sitting drinking and chatting while they waited for their food to come, Oscar had talked them into having food, after all he had arrived at tea time. Ray had a pint of Camerons, Gold Bullion, he was from Camerons country but had never had it before and it was very nice. Oscar was asking how they got the Artifact to work and Ray admitted that it all happened by accident. One minuet they had been arguing about the Artifact in France and the next they were at the Riverside Caravan Park in Pateley Bridge.
He then went on to tell how they worked out it was phone numbers in Ray phone, that combined with the two of them holding the legs of the Artifact together, made the jump work. Oscar had figured most of this out by now but the bit about it only being Ray's phone, was new and he was now wondering if taking the phone would do. Oscar was just going to see how it all went and if they didn't need Ray and Dona, they could just be retired with a thank you pension.
That night back at Ray and Dona's, they sat down for a rest in between getting ready to go to London and discussed if what they were doing was right. Of course they had to go, there was no getting out of it really so they just got ready and went to bed. Nether of them could get off to sleep for ages but eventually they both dropped off.
